From "Chi Kung Health and Martial Arts" by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming:

Swinging the Arms or Bai Bi (Bãi Tí: Bãi là đong đưa, Tí làcánh tay)

In the last 50 years an exercice developed from the principles of Yi GinChing (Dịch Cân Kinh) has become popular. Although the exercice isvery simple the results in strenghthening the body and curing illnessesare very significant. Theoretically, when the arms are swungrepeatedly, the nerves and Chi channels in the shoulder joints arestimulated to a higher state, and this Chi will flow to the area oflower potential to complete the circulation. Because a number of the Chichannels connected with the different organs terminate in the hands, swinging the arms increases the circulation in these channels. Armswinging will not only increase the Chi circulation, but will alsoincrease the flow of blood from the relaxed up and down motion.

From the last 50 years of experience, we know that a number of illnessescan be cured simply by practicing swinging the arms frequently. Forsome cancers the increase in Chi circulation will help the degeneratedcells to function normally and eliminate the cancer. According to theChi theory, cancers are caused by the stagnation of Chi and blood, whichresults in changes to the structure of the cell. Several types ofcancers that can be cured by swinging the arms are cancers of the lungs, esophasus, and lymph. Other kinds of disorders that can also be helpedby swinging the arms are: hardening of the liver, paralysis caused byhigh blood pressure, high blood pressure itself, heart trouble (cóthể kể cả bệnh thất tình đấy), and nervous disorders.

The method is very simplẹ Stand with the feet shoulder width apart, with the tip of the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. Swing thearms forward until they are horizontal with the palms facing down, thenswing them backwards as far as possible with the palms facing up. Keepthe entire body relaxed. Start with 200 or 300 repitions, thengradually increase to 1000 or 2000 or up to half an hour.

From: "The Tao of Longevity" by Da Liu:

Swinging Arms.

Recently, "Swinging Arms", a simple health exercice, has become popularin both the Peoplés Republic of China and Natioalist China. Not ascomplicated as many forms of yoga, this exercice requires no training orundue exertion. It can be performed at any time, in any place, in alimited amount of space, and without special equipment. For thisreason, it is of special benefit to the office worker (most netters) whois sedentary and restricted to a small area of spacẹ Regardless of sexor age, the exercice can be performed regularly and with ease. It isespecially accessible to the elderly.

Swinging Arms promises many physical benefits: to relax the joints, lower high blood pressure, increase energy, help digestion, promote apeaceful mind, and, by increasing body activity, stimulate bloodcirculation. Creating more body heat help the body digest food, displaces wastes, and create energy. Its upward and downward movementsof the diaphragm vibrate the stomach and both of the intestines.Indirectly, appetite is imprived, as the body receives more nourishmentand calories from ingested food. The kidneys and liver also benefitfrom this vibrating motion. In ađition to helping the circulation anddigestion, the exercice is said to cure piles and rheumatism.

In China it is claimed that Swinging Arms is an effective treatmentagainst cancer. Many Chinese physicians believe that cancer is causedby bad circulation. When the Chi cannot flow sufficiently through theblood, stagnation occurs and wastes accumulate in the body tissues. Thelymph nodes, which remove wastes from the blood, cannot functionproperly, so that the wastes become toxic. Swinging Arms improves thecirculation, resulting in the excretion of wastes and in improvedhealth.

In many respects, Swinging Arms resembles T'ai Chi Ch'uan (Thái CựcQuyền) The feet are firmly placed flat on the ground, at shoulderwidth. The body 's weight is placed not in the shoulders but in thelegs. The trunk of the body is straight, with the center of gravity atthe waist. There is no tension in the groin area, the abdomen does notprotrude, and the chest is not inflated. The spinal column is straightand erect. The neck and head, too, are erect but relaxed. The mouth isnaturally closed, not tensẹ The eyes look forward, focusing on a pointin place. The mind concentrates without thinking. The energy of theChi and the mind are directed to the abdomen, or Tan T'ien (ĐanĐiền: vùng bụng dưới rốn; huyệt đan điền ở khoảng 5cmdưới rốn), and the body sinks its weight into the legs and feet. This is very similar to the beginning posture of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

The main action of the exercice takes place in the arms and hands. Atthe start, the arms should hang naturally at the sides of the bodỵFingers of the hands should retain their natural curves, neither joinednor separated too much. With the palms of both hands facing backward, bring both arms forward and upward to about shoulder level. Theswinging motion should be light and effortless. From the navel up thebody should be light, as 80 percent of its weight resides in the legs. Now swing the arms back down at either side, thrusting with a smooth andeven force. Consider this one complete swing.

The swinging motion should be continued at a regular and easy rate untilyou feel tired or strained. Do not foolishly believe that you will getqicker results if you perform the exercice more rapidlỵ Do as manyswings as your physique and age permit without fatiguẹ You canincrease the number of swings as your body grows stronger. Gradually, you should be able to complete 300 or even 1000.

When you first begin doing the exercice, you may become distressed bythe results. The body will burp and break wind, because you are relaxedand a vibrating action on the stomach and intestines is aiding thedigestive system. The legs and feet will feel sore and swollen, becausethe Chi and fresh blood are filling the lower extremities. Increasedcirculation also causes the body to perspire morẹ As the physicalcondition of the body improves with continued practice of swinging arms, however, these problems go away.
